Performing a program of memorable works arranged for chamber ensembles, members of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago showcase three pieces by European composers of the modern classical age. Stravinsky catapulted to fame with his enduring ballet The Firebird, and the dazzling selections heard here capture the daring brilliance of the composer’s original score. Inspired by a poem by Mallarmé, Debussy set the emotions of the work to music for his rich and provocative Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Completing the program is Martinů’s mysterious and thoughtful piano quintet.
